During the war the maximum height for ladies shoes was 2½ inches in height. Although rationing continued into the 1950’s heel height restrictions and the ban on peep toes was lifted. Although materials were becoming more available there were still restrictions on materials so suede and reptile skins such as crocodile and snake remained popular. Many women, due to wartime discipline continued to wear front lacing sturdy low heeled shoes. For the mass market though British manufacturers were designing higher heels with peep toes and ankle straps.
