During World War ll rationing and shortages of materials meant that shoemakers had to look for alternative materials. Suede and reptile skins such as crocodile and snake were relatively abundant as these materials were not suitable for military footwear so shoe manufacturers started to use these materials. There was a 2½ inch restriction on heel heights during World War ll as high heels were considered frivolous.
Due to the changing role of women replacing men, who were away fighting, in the factories and in other roles everday footwear needed to be practical. Comfortable styles with a cuban heel and high vamp, two tones, were popular. After the war due to wartime discipline women continued to wear front lacing, sturdy low heeled shoes.
